Rupa Huq MP has today called for Education Secretary Gavin Williamson to resign if he does not U-turn in the wake of the A-levels results debacle.

Huq said: “Gavin Williamson is completely out of his depth. This discredited individual who clearly knows nothing about education and was sacked by Theresa for treachery and disloyalty when in charge of defence is now gambling with the nation’s kids futures which are pure collateral in the fight he has picked with the education unions since he took on the job. The great A-level swindle where childrens’ examless results are not based on professional predictions from the dedicated teachers who have shepherded them for years but instead an opaque computer formula that grinds them down based on postcode prejudice will only be exacerbated on Thursday when GCSE results come out where a far greater number of students, wider ability range and points on the grade scale by which candidates can trip up.

He has also alienated every type of teacher from those in big community comprehensives to selective fee-paying private schools who are similarly seething that he rides roughshod over their professionalism by spouting a mantra of “grade inflation” which is questioning their very integrity and sending out a message that they are in some way crooks. One told me it devalues the entire teaching profession and sends out the message that they are not to be trusted. He should quit now. At least he has an alternative career ahead as a Frank Spencer impersonator!”
